  4. Ian – you were a fierce champion for taking amazing science to the market and helping researchers along the way to reach new heights. Your involvement in some of CSIRO’s spinout companies made a real impact with those companies still going strong. I really enjoyed working with you and was so excited to be working with you again on another commercialisation project – just like old times! Sadly it is not to be but you will be forever remembered in the science translation world.

  5. From all of us here at DST Group please accept our sincere condolences. Ian was a great man, a true asset to the Australian research community, a champion of micro-nano technology, and sadly missed by us all. Our hearts go out to Ian’s family and many of his friends, and we hope he rests in peace.

  6. Ian – you gave me a unique opportunity, like you created opportunities for so many others. I am forever thankful for this. And once I was down under, it was such a pleasure to work with you, and learn from you on so many different aspects of life. It is with great sadness, but with warm memories, that I read this. My thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones.

  7. A fellow bon vivant. You will be sorely missed my friend. Always. My heart goes out to Hayley, your family and all those you have touched throughout your life. I too am honoured…

We send our condolences and sympathy to Hayley, family and loved ones in this difficult time. Ian will forever be remembered for his impact and resilience as well as for gate crashing the ANFF-Q Christmas party in 2019.

  10. I was very sad to hear the news of Ian’s untimely death. Ian was a warm and generous man and I enjoyed working for him at the Wound CRC. My sincere condolences to Hayley and his family.

  11. A tribute to a great man:
We spent a lot of time with Ian between 2000-2006 when we lived in the same neighbourhood. Ian was a close friend and we’re deeply saddened by his passing. We remember Ian as a person of contrast – shy, but full of stories; rugged, but smooth; modest, but a confident high achiever. He was a joy to be around, a kind, fun and adventurous person.
We will always have Ian in our hearts and minds.
    RIP Ian

  12. Very saddened to hear of Ian’s passing. I enjoyed our interaction during his term at the Wounds CRC, where he really made a huge difference and drove it to success. Ian was very skilled at taking science to the market so it could make people’s lives better. Thinking of Ian’s family at this very sad time.

  13. Ian, I miss you already — over the last couple of years I have come to know you: you were so dynamic and great company. We had some great conversations, covering off all manner of interesting topics. I was shocked and saddened to hear of your passing. 14. Ian – you will always be remembered by the Skin Deep Team as a warm, funny, and clever man, who had so many stories to tell and who so clearly loved his wife (and his cats). The pain we – and many others – feel at your passing is a true testament to the happiness you brought in life. You used to tell us when you were going away for a few days to look after your wife for you and we will continue to do that.
Hayley – you will always have our love and support.

    Your Skin Deep family.

  15. To Ian’s loved ones,

Over the last couple of years I got to know Ian really well and would speak with him most weeks. Our conversations were wonderful, and sometimes associated with belly laughs, tears and occasionally “Wookiee noises”!

He lectured to my Biomaterials class and the students still mention that lecture as “one of the best they have ever experienced” – he had a gift for distilling complex information down to only what was important.

Ian had truly become a Mentor of mine, someone I trusted, deeply respected and always looked forward to spending time with. I am so deeply sad I can’t spend more time with him, but I can promise you I plan to tell everyone willing to listen what a great bloke he was.

He will truly be missed by many, and the impact of his brilliant life’s work will continue to save and enhance the lives of millions.

My sincere condolences to Hayley and his family.

  16. You were one of kind .. charisma, intelligence, humour and wit all balled into one. Truly irreplaceable. Blessed to have been your friend .. you’ll be sorely missed by everyone you touched.

  17. Ian you will always be remembered by us as a warm, clever , funny guy – one we’d always want at our dinner party – we had many together and always enjoyed the touch of “Bond” you brought to the table.
Our boys have fond memories of movies , motorised toys & you glueing Jamie’s bitten lip back together on Christmas Day .
You were a great friend , we are very sorry for your early passing and send our sincerest regards to Hayley.

  18. How do we even begin to describe the immense loss we all feel from the untimely loss of this beautiful person? Words fail me.
Ian was incredibly accomplished, yet humble and generous. So much of the Australian technology and healthcare sectors are built today on the work Ian did – he was ahead of his time. It was an honour to work with him and witness his commercial and scientific genius.
But above all else, I’ve lost one of my best friends. I’ll miss our heart to hearts; our banter; our famous lunches and dinners and laughing until we cried. I am a better, happier, more enriched person because of Ian.
Ian – I cannot believe that I now have a future without you in it – it seems inconceivable and hollow. There’s a hole in my life I cannot imagine being filled. Rest in peace, my brother. I’ll love you always.
To Hayley and family – I offer my most heartfelt condolences. My love and support is here always. xoxo

  19. Ian you were an inspiration and mentor. I am so saddened that the world does not have your mind and your jokes. You will be missed.
Hayley my heart is with you through this. You have my love and support. Xx

  20. Dear Ian, the time that I spent with you at the ANFF was one of admiration and a pleasure working with a college of your intellect, enthusiasm and a genuinely nice person. I am deeply saddened to hear of your passing and you will be fondly remembered by all that know you.

  21. Dear Hayley and friends,

We all feel your loss and know this world has lost a great man and a very dear friend. I pass on to you my fullest and heartfelt sympathies.

Ian’s intellect and insight into scientific and business-related matters was of the highest level. His compassion and loyalty to his friends was firm and unending. Ian had an ability to intellectually challenge and captivate everybody he conversed with including an ability to instill fascination and imagination into whatever level of conversation was being held.

In the past and in the rare times he was single, I recall a night out with Ian being rather like a night out with a real James Bond. Ian was a wonderfully skillful boxer, and me a quick runner, so our safety was assured. Cruising around town in Ian’s amazing sports car, dressed to kill, wonderful food, top shelf Shiraz and in Ian’s case with rugged good looks, inevitably attracting the eye of a woman or two who appeared convinced they needed some form of rescuing.

I think we all feel there is so much unfinished business to be done and many conversations that needed to be held. We have all lost a wonderful and dear friend. Life is indeed all too short.

To Hayley, please be strong. I know Ian viewed you as a very determined, clever and creative lady. You can call on those skills but please reach out to Ian’s friends for any support you may need.

  22. I will miss you Ian. You were an inspiration and I truly value the time we worked together over the last couple of years. I feel honored to know you, to be your colleague and thank you for our friendship! You may not be here, but your influence will continue and I will always remember the lunch we shared on the rooftop of UNSW when you first visited ANFF-NSW.

    Rest in peace mate.
