I got to know Bevan over the last 5-6 years playing oztag as firstly a teammate, then an inspiration and finally, a friend. In the first few rep tournaments I realised that, playing outside of Bevan as I did, he covered for me if I missed a tag or backed me up when I made a break. He was a good teammate. Later, on long drives down to Ballina & Coffs Harbour for training & tournaments, I heard about the steps he had taken to markedly improve his health, even when it went against orthodox medical treatments. That was inspirational. More recently, as we trained together for oztag, he kept encouraging me to keep pushing myself. He was a friend. Finally, as our oztag careers were winding back, we had made plans to train & race together for master’s athletics. Sadly those plans will now not come to fruition. I won’t say rest-in-peace Bevan as I reckon you’ll be finding the nearest game of footy to play in up there, so you can show ‘em a clean per of heels, just like you did to so many down here. See ya mate.
Gone from your sight, but never from your hearts. Let peace and comfort find you and your family during this difficult time. Sending prayers your way.
I’ve known Bevan for nearly 20 years running with Masters Athletics. Whenever Bevan was healthy enough he was training and was always good humored and fun to train with .He was always very supportive and helpful when we had our many discussions about injuries and ailments.
Mostly I will remember what a gorgeous runner he was -he always made it look effortless while the rest of us were struggling away and he still beat everyone. He was always humble about his achievements and encouraging of other runners.
Bevan was and always will be, very good friend 🙂
