My “other dad” John. So many happy memories. He wasn’t overly extroverted but he was always funny. Witty comments when you least expect them. He had some unusual habits, one of which we always used to joke about. We would “get in trouble” for cutting the tomato slices too think! He would cut them so paper thin it was incredible! To this day, every time I cut a tomato I think of John.
He has been in and out of my life at various times so much over the last 46 years, but he was always there whenever I needed him. He will be greatly missed, and always loved. xx
John started out as my flatmate’s Dad but became a very good friend and a father figure. He mentored me on my journey to becoming an aussie bloke – blue steak, XXXX, State of Origin, meat pies, camping although I had to draw the line at seafood on Xmas day. Sorry John that’s just wrong. We laughed a lot and I so enjoyed all the time we spent together blaming the wind for all the poor golf shots and blaming the shots for our hangovers – we were such lightweights. You were a meticulous man in everything you did which initially was frustrating but then then so quirky – it must have taken you an hour to shave off your moustache at Lisa’s 30th (its not rocket science mate). My fondest memory will always be when you came to Ireland, met my family, my friends, had a real Guinness and sang songs with us until daybreak at our wedding.
When I first went to OZ my Granny said to me that “We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere”. Well John there is a small bit of me breaking over here thinking about you, Chris, Lisa and her boys. A good man has been taken too soon. I will miss you.
Stewie had the most amazing sense of humour. They way his eyes twinkled while telling a cheeky joke will always be remembered. He had the ability to always make you feel at ease and important. But it will be his love and pride for Lisa and the boys that I will remember the most. Oh and his dimple. Love you John xx
Stewie had a way to make you totally feel at ease, he listened I mean really listened to you and made you feel important to him. The way his eyes twinkled and the dimple got deeper when you shared a cheeky joke will be a memory I will always treasure. Xx
John was a massive influence on my path in life. He came into my life at just the perfect moment.
I was 16 going on 17 when I first met the Stewart family…we would work with horses all day and then I would come in and cook with John and lisa, making dinner for everyone! He was always so passionate about food and so was I… he told me ‘You can’t be a check-out-chic at Woolworths forever and horses will never make you any money,’ so he encouraged me to become a chef… which I did. I travelled the world, came home and opened my own cafe! During one of my visits home from cooking overseas I wanted to cook an 8 course fancy dinner for him and the family which entailed ice globes that took me days to make and I kept them in the freezer! When John arrived for dinner that night he proceeded to take my ice sculptures out of the freezer to fit his beers in!!! Haha Super stressful for me! But yes….cold beer is very important! This is just one fond memory I have of John, there are so many. He also volunteered at the commonwealth games as a driver and helped me with my business by recommending and dropping people off at my cafe, he was so proud of my achievements! Such an amazing man and that’s an understatement! I will continue to make him proud and I will be forever grateful that he came into my life at just that perfect moment, he will be so sadly missed.
I was recently told I am very much like my uncle John. What a compliment! I always thought of uncle John as the cool uncle who would let me get away with ‘things’. So this makes me cool too correct?
I have fond memories of going to uncle John’s, Aunty Chris’s and Lisa’s place as a kid and feeling like the dark sheep side of myself was free to roam!
Although the distance (kms) has kept us apart for many years, his departure leaves a hole in my heart and I will miss him very much. Love you uncle John!
Matt
I first met John as a young 7 year old boy, when Robbie and I would take the Stewart family down to Garie in the back of the old Ute as they didn’t own a car. We’d pick them up from Bexley North for a big Sunday at the beach. Garie days were very happy days. Uncle Robbie helped John secure a Carpentry Apprenticeship at the Opera House where he had a successful start to his Carpentry career and where he would meet Christine who also worked there as a Tracer. We had a great visit whilst on holiday at the property he and Chris owned on the Gold Coast. Whilst we haven’t seen John too many times in ver recent years, we have very fond memories of him. Always laughing and happy and real good company. Sending all our love to Lisa and Chris at the very sad loss of our nephew and cousin John x
My first memory of “ Young John” was when we visited my Dad at the Opera House. He was swinging off a bit of scaffolding, no shirt with a tool belt swinging off his hip. He had a big smile and was so happy to see his little cousins coming to visit him a work. Each time would see Johnny over the years it was like there was no time gap at all. He was always so happy to see you and the laughs would come instantly. I can and will only ever think of him as young. He was cool, smart and funny. God Bless you “Young Johnny Stewart”
So many happy memories and Stewie was a big part of them. Bushwalking, camping, rockclimbing, poker (Ok. Not so much poker! Lol), Stewie was there taking part and adding his own fantastic flavour to the event. I remember so many fun times, laughing at our miserable souls as we hunkered down in freezing rain on a Girraween bushwalk, fun winter nights in the huts at Tongariro, my kayak verses Stewies 4wd race in NSW, and many other good times camped under Big Top (Stewies large tent!). Just to many great times to mention but every year I will remember those times and I will have a beer for our old mate.
